• Sun creams lose their ability to block ultra-violet rays after a year
  • 74 per cent of Brits will take lotion that is over a year old on holiday
  • Exposure to UV rays is a key factor in developing skin cancer

With summer just around the corner, many Brits are preparing to stock up on new bikinis and flipflops for their long awaited jaunt abroad.

But it seems they are putting poolside fashion ahead of one vital summer essential on their shopping list.

A new survey has shown that nearly three quarters of all UK holidaymakers are at risk of UV exposure because they use out of date sun cream.

Past their sell-by date: Three quarters of British holidaymakers said they used lotions that were more than a year old, and in many cases considerably older

Past their sell-by date: Three quarters of British holidaymakers said they used lotions that were more than a year old, and in many cases considerably older

The survey found that 74 per cent of people taking a sunny beach holiday this year would take lotion that is over a year old.

The vast majority of sun creams have an effective use by date of 12 months from date of purchase after which time the manufacturers will not vouch for the active UV blocking ability of their products.

But the vast majority of holidaymakers said they used lotions that were more than a year old, and in many cases considerably older.

A third of people (32 per cent) said they would take sun creams that were over two years old and another third admitted keeping sun tan lotion over three years, with 15 per cent of people keeping sun block for over four years in their cupboard at home.

DID YOU KNOW?

NHS advises the use of a minimum SPF factor of 15 to prevent skin damage

Two thirds (65 per cent) were unaware that most sun creams were out of date by twelve months.

Escentual.com Beauty Editor Emma Leslie, who carried out the research, said: ‘Sun creams lose their ability to block UV after a year, so it?s advisable to replace your products every summer.

‘If you check the label on your sun cream most of them have a mark which says ?12M?, which means the manufacturer recommends it?s used for only twelve months after purchase.

‘The effectiveness will deteriorate considerably after that time and the active ingredients will lose their potency and you may be left with little or no protection against the harmful UV rays.’

Exposure to UV rays is a key factor in developing skin cancer and in the past 30 years malignant melanoma has been the fastest growing form of cancer in the UK.

Unaware: Clearly labelling on sun-creams was unclear to most British consumers because over 65 per cent were unaware that most sun-creams were out of date by twelve months

More than 65 per cent of Brits are unaware that most sun creams are out of date after a year

Incidence rates are now seven times higher for men, and four times higher for women than in the 1970s, and in 2010 there were 12,818 new cases and 2,203 deaths from skin cancer.

Emma Leslie added: ‘It?s so important to protect your skin against UV rays and it?s not just about avoiding cancer. Sun damage will prematurely age your skin, causing deep lines and wrinkles.

‘It?s much better to tan safely and protect your skin from the worst ravages of the sun?s rays. And there are several reasonably priced high SPF lotions on the market now, so it?s not the case that the more protection you get the more the product costs.’

Most holidaymakers said they would use SPF 20-30 at the start of their holiday, but by the end of the trip many would drop the SPF down as they got a tan and one quarter said they would use less than factor 10 for the last few days on holiday.

NHS advises the use of a minimum SPF factor of 15 to prevent skin damage.

As the premiere date of True Blood‘s sixth season draws closer, you may find yourself wondering what the heck else could happen to these characters? It’s getting to a 24-esque realm where you think, seriously, how many bad days can Jack Bauer have? So just to catch you up on all the ridiculousness that has transpired during the first five wonderful seasons, we’re recapping the astounding journeys taken by nine main characters in a series called True Blood: Beginnings. Up next is Jessica Hamby, Bill Compton’s vampire progeny.

True Blood Beginnings: Everything You Need to Know About Alcide Herveaux >>>

Jessica first appeared midway through season 1, and she has since blossomed from an immature teenager to a sexy vamp vixen who frequently rocks naughty lingerie and goes after who and what she wants. But she wouldn’t even be if not for Bill’s actions at Fangtasia earlier in the season. He killed the vampire bartender Longshadow after he attacked Sookie because she discovered he was stealing from the bar. The punishment for staking a vampire is usually the true death, but Bill is instead sentenced to create another vampire, and Jessica 2.0 is born.

Jessica Hamby’s Rebirth

jessicabitten.jpg

Jess was a church-going youth group member who just happened to be out that night for her first party. Bill bites her, digs a grave and buries himself next to her for the night, but she comes up screaming, asking for help. At first, she’s distraught over not being able to go home, but once she realizes no more homeschooling, belts, clarinets or rules, she’s thrilled.

She instantly becomes a pouty brat, thinking she can kill anyone she wants, whining, complaining about Tru Blood and calling Bill the worst maker ever. He pawns her off to Eric, who bosses her effectively, but eventually returns her to Bill for being too out of control.

jessicanewborntrueblood.jpg

When Sookie tries to bond with her, Jessica convinces her to help pay a visit to her old family. She then attacks her father when he yells at her for disappearing and threatens to kill him for all the times he beat her. Bill cleans up Sookie’s mess by glamouring everyone. Soon after that, Jessica meets Hoyt, and the two begin to develop feelings for each other. Bill and Sookie walk in on them making out, Bill tosses Hoyt out and Jessica whines some more, so they decide to bring her with them to Dallas as they search for Godric inside the Fellowship of the Sun.

You Can’t Stake “True” Love

As soon as they reach the vampire hotel in Dallas, Bill reprimands Jessica for ordering a human off the menu. So she calls Hoyt and they talk all night. He drives all the way to Dallas to be with her, and they both divulge that they’re virgins and decide to be each other’s first. Unfortunately, they realize during round two that Jessica’s lady parts have healed, meaning (dun dun DUNNNN) she’ll be a virgin forever. So no matter how many times they do it, Jessica’s cherry will always be, uh, flowered, which is clearly every teen’s worst nightmare. But Hoyt doesn’t care, and their love flourishes.

She meets Hoyt’s mom, cries bloody tears after Maxine Fortenberry is mean to her, then bites Maxine during continued taunting while under Maryann’s spell. That prompts Hoyt to chastise her and leave. She tells Bill she’s going to apologize, but instead she heads to a gas station and feeds on an unsuspecting truck driver. Ahhh, kids!

The First Bite is (Accidentally) the Deepest

jessicaeatstrucker.jpg

Jessica drinks a little too much and kills the truck driver, so she stashes the body in Bill’s basement while she figures out what to do amid the horrific stench. Thankfully for her, he’s been kidnapped and isn’t at home. Sookie asks for help finding him, so the pair takes a trip to Fangtasia where Jessica probes Pam about vampire life and how to properly feed and dispose of bodies. She considers buying a chainsaw, but when she returns from a trip to the store, the body is gone (stolen by the vampire Franklin, who was in the house searching for a file on Sookie).

Sam hires her as a hostess at Merlotte’s, where she runs into a former classmate who recognizes her. He becomes her first glamour, and she finds enjoyment in the work and in her skill at making humans do what she wants. She even gets on Arlene’s good side by glamouring an unruly customer into finishing up and leaving a huge tip. Then Jessica lures the customer into the ladies’ room, where she feeds off her.

Don’t Turn Around (‘Cause You’re Gonna See My Heart Not Beating)

After Bill is rescued from Russell’s mansion and reunited with Jessica, she admits that she missed him. He lashes out, saying he can’t take care of her and releasing her as his progeny. She is steadfast in not leaving, and she begins to sob, saying she doesn’t want to be alone.

jessicacrying.jpg

He comforts her, and they bond about their failing relationships (as a starved Bill has just attacked Sookie in the back of a van). He teaches her how to spar, and she uses her newfound skills on werewolves at Sookie’s house. She chases them outside, where Russell catches and bites her, only letting her go when Bill insults him. She runs off, chased by another werewolf that she kills while covered in blood in full sight of Hoyt.

Hoyt later admits he still loves her, but Tommy gets in the way by trying to kiss Jessica. She rejects him, Hoyt punches him, and then he attacks Hoyt while in pit bull form. Jessica comes to his rescue and forces him to drink her blood to heal his injuries. And just like that, the couple is back together again. After she admits she’ll never stop drinking blood, Hoyt offers his own and she chows down.

Home Is Where the Heart Is

Hoyt and Jessica move in together, but they’re having some domestic troubles. They fight over human food vs. blood, and Jessica has urges she can’t control. Pam tells her not to resist her vampire “hunter” nature, but she insists she loves Hoyt. After he gets pummeled in a fight while defending her honor (and she can’t step in because someone is recording it with a cell phone camera) and refuses her blood, she flees back to Fangtasia and feasts on a handsome fangbanger in the bathroom. She feels guilty and confesses to Hoyt, who is angry, so she glamours him and he forgets anything happened.

Later, Hoyt and Jessica stumble across Jason after he was gang-raped by the werepanthers (yup, you read that right), and she feeds him her blood to save his life. But, uh oh, now she’s got a special connection with a sexpot too. Hoyt thanks her for saving his best friend and tries to kiss her, but she’s cold in a human way, not just a vampire way.

The Sun! Mom! We Want It Now!

All the vampires have to chain themselves down before dawn, since Marnie/Antonia’s spell will make them walk outside during daylight hours. Jessica escapes her silver, kills a guard, steals his keys and crawls out into the sun. She’s about to (literally) melt when Jason saves her, kisses her and carries her back to a crying Bill. Then she breaks up with a distraught Hoyt, who says he deserves someone better who can have children and won’t be a lousy virgin for the rest of her (thousands of years-long) life. He rescinds his invitation, and out she goes.

She heads right to Jason’s and tells him she and Hoyt are done, which upsets him because Hoyt is his best friend. So he also takes back his invitation, and poor Jessica can’t stop uncontrollably flying out of houses.

He brings her a box filled with her things, from Hoyt, and she invites him inside. He says it’s probably not a good idea, so they have sex in the back of his pickup truck instead. Cause it’s not wrong if it’s not in the house. Jason then tells her to glamour his guilt away, but she refuses.

A Moon Goddess Battle and More Vampire Love

Jessica joins up with Bill, Eric and Pam in their assault on the Moon Goddess Emporium, where Marnie/Antonia is barricaded with all the witches. They’re about to blow it up, even though Lafayette, Sookie, Tara and Holly are among those inside, but a force field protects them.

While fighting with Marnie/Antonia-controlled vampires outside, Pam fires a rocket into the force field that severely burns Jason, and Jessica is forced to save him again with her blood. After the battle is over, they admit they can’t stop thinking about each other and bang again. She says she doesn’t want to be his girlfriend because she doesn’t want to hurt him, so they agree to keep it totally caj.

Rescues and Parties

Jessica senses Jason is in trouble and rescues him from the clutches of newly-outed gay vampire American Steve Newlin, and they do the nasty again. Then she throws a party with a bunch of college kids, complete with Guitar Hero, and Jason crashes, sees a frat guy hit on her and leaves with a chick named Cammy. At her next party, Steve Newlin shows up and offers her $10,000 for Jason. She declines and ridicules him, and he attacks her. But she’s stronger, so she kicks out Steve and the rest of the party.

While shopping, she meets a man whose smell she can’t resist, and she tries to turn her lust into more Jason sex. But he refuses, saying he’s had an epiphany and will no longer be treated as a piece of meat. She puts on sweats and promises they can be friends, then overhears Sookie confessing that she murdered Debbie after Tara was shot in the head and turned into a vampire. After Debbie’s parents find out she’s dead and call off the investigation, Andy refuses and Jessica glamours him into forgetting about the case.

Bonding and Bickering

Jessica and Bill search his office for listening devices, and he finds a marijuana roach in the couch. She admits to having people over, but promises that no one was eaten or drained, and he says she can take care of herself and that the weed is low quality. Whoa there, cool dad. She reaffirms that Bill and Sookie are different than Sookie and anyone else, and he proclaims that he has done well as a maker.

Jessica also bonds with Tara at Fangtasia about the struggles of being a newly-turned vampire and how to control urges. She tells Tara she should really look forward to feeding on human while having sex with them because that, well, that feeling is just amazing. But the sentiment doesn’t last very long after Tara feeds on Hoyt in the bathroom, all while Jess is drinking a chick in the next stall over. As soon as Hoyt is distressed, Jessica jumps in and a bathroom brawl ensues until Pam breaks it up.

Jessica has to deal with more pathetic behavior from Hoyt, who again professes his love. Later, Jason stops by while she’s feeding on some dude and tells her he just found out his parents were killed by a vampire. They kiss, he tastes blood and gets angry, she bites him, he shoots her in the head, everyone heals and they angrily part company.

Abduction and Redemption

Jessica leaves Fantasia with a stranger, who kidnaps her and takes her a remote compound where Hoyt is hanging out with some new redneck buddies. They offer Hoyt the chance to kill her for revenge, but he can’t because he still loves her. He asks why she stopped, and she said she didn’t want to and even prayed that the feelings would return, but they never did. He fires a shot into the air, and when the guard comes in to see what Hoyt’s done, Jessica snaps his neck. Sam, Luna and Andy take care of the rest of the folks at the compound.

Later, Hoyt summons Jason and Jessica to Merlotte’s, where he tells them his intention to move to Alaska to work on an oil rig. His final request is that she glamour away any memory he has of either her or Jason, so he can make a fresh start. They are both devastated by the finality of his request, but Jessica obliges him and tenderly imbues with him hope for a carefree life and a new, better first love.

jessicamerlotts.jpg

Bill Goes All “Lilith”

Bill summons Jessica to the Authority Headquarters, where she finds him increasingly religious and questions his fervor. She compares him to her fundamentalist Christian parents, and he implores her to read the vampire bible with an open mind because he believes he is fated to lead their kind into the coming age. Since Russell and Steve are now after Jason, she tricks Bill into letting her leave (with guards) so she can turn him into a vampire and they can be together. She asks Jason to trust her, violently bites him and then has him shoot the two guards with wooden bullets while they are being buried together. She tells Jason if she has to spend eternity with anyone, she wants it to be him.

Jessica pleads for asylum at Fangtasia, and Pam refuses before Jessica says she knows where Bill and Eric are hiding. She patches things up with Tara before she and Pam are captured and taken back to the Authority. There, Bill again tries to convince her to follow Lilith. She calls him crazy, and he slaps her across the room.

The recently-escaped Eric and Nora team up with Sookie, Jason and Tara and storm the facility, killing everyone. Jessica is ecstatic to see Jason again and professes her love, but he rejects her because she is a vampire. Bill drinks Lilith’s blood, turns into a demon and sends them all fleeing. Eric, Sookie, Jason, Tara, Nora, Pam and Jessica ride up the elevator, ready to fight their way out of Authority Headquarters.

What’s Next for Jessica?

With Hoyt out of the picture and Jason seemingly rejecting her, it’s anyone’s guess what is in store for Jessica in season 6. My only prediction is that she’ll be naked a lot and probably have a lot of sex, which is really all that is required of her. I’m sure she’ll continue to grow into an even stronger vampire (and woman!) who will be even more valuable to Bill than in seasons past. And he probably needs the help more, since he’s a raving demonic undead lunatic. What challenges do you foresee for Jessica? Do you hope she ends up with Jason?

Check back Friday for our next profile, drug dealing-prostitute-turned-medium Lafayette Reynolds.

  • Charlotte had two botched boob jobs at the age of 19
  • Now 25, she’s had to live with lumpy, lopsided breasts
  • She sought help of Last Chance Salon
  • They removed the implants and discovered a number of alarming errors
  • Her implants had been made from silicone not fit for the human body

Two botched boob jobs left a woman with ‘horrible’ droopy, lopsided breasts that she hated the sight of.

But 25-year-old youth worker Charlotte’s situation could have been much worst – as it turned out the implants she was given were made from non-medical grade silicone that’s not suitable for the human body.

She was lucky the implants she spent £4000 on six years ago hadn’t ruptured before she had them removed this year.

Mum knows best: A tearful Charlotte confessed she wished she’d never had the boob job at the age of 19 against the wishes of her mother

Charlotte from Basildon, Essex, shares her story on this week’s Last Chance Salon TV show where she is finally able to put her ordeal behind her with the help of their surgeon Mr Vik Vijh.

Charlotte explained why she had the surgery at the age of 19 against the wishes of her mother.

She said: ‘Some boys did bully me because I was flat-chested compared to other girls at school. You go to these surgeries to make yourself feel better and it just didn’t.’

The new look Charlotte hoped for after the operation was a disaster. She was left with saggy, lopsided breasts and when she returned to the surgeons to have it fixed with a second operation, they only made it worse again.

‘There is so much excess skin,’ she said through tears. ‘They’re really saggy, they don’t even face forward, they’re not nice at all. I don’t think there are words to describe how I feel.’

Mr Vijh said Charlotte was suffering from what he called ‘double bubble’ after the augmentation. The medical term for this is ‘capsular contracture’, a side effect of one in ten boob jobs. The body forms a tissue lining around implant called a capsule and in some instances the capsule contracts squeezing the implant.

Mr Vijh said: ‘Charlotte regrets having breast surgery so young but to be fair to her, the problem relates to poor management, poor treatment and poor choice of procedure. Hopefully we can put things right.’

Mr Vijh said he would take out Charlotte’s original implants and then if the blood supply to her breasts was good enough, he would be able to give her an uplift.

The TV cameras followed Charlotte as she went under the knife where Mr Vijh made some alarming findings.

He explained: ‘The implants we removed were made with non-medical grade silicone. That’s not suitable for the human body and is made to fill mattresses. She’s lucky it hadn’t ruptured.’

Mr Vijh also discovered why the botched boob job had given Charlotte such a lopsided look.

The implants were also the wrong cup size to what Charlotte ordered and had been placed incorrectly so they were laid upside down on her chest.

Mr Vijh sorted the catalogue of errors by inserting safe, correctly positioned implants to transform the shape of Charlotte’s breasts.

Once she had recovered from the surgery and returned to the Salon, Charlotte said she couldn’t be happier to finally have the cleavage she always wanted.

She said: ‘I feel like I have a natural pair of boobs, I feel so much better. I look in the mirror and now everything looks where it’s meant to be.’

Jennifer_lopez

At some point along the trajectory of Jennifer Lopez’s formidable career, you?ve probably found yourself dancing and humming along to one of her many ubiquitous pop hits. Now, more than a dozen years after her musical debut, the multi-hyphenate diva is ready to take a look back with her first retrospective package.

?Dance Again?the Hits? is set for release July 24 through Epic Records, her former longtime label announced Monday. Lopez has not left her current label, Island Def Jam, but admitted that she contractually owed Epic a package.

The greatest-hits package includes two new dance jams, ?Goin? In? (featuring Flo Rida) and ?Dance Again? (featuring Pitbull), which recently hit No. 1 on the Billboard Dance/Club chart, along with signature hits ?Love Don’t Cost a Thing,? ?If You Had My Love? and ?Waiting for Tonight.? The deluxe edition includes bonus tracks and a DVD of music videos.

Lopez has sold more than 70 million records worldwide and garnered 11 No. 1 hits. She has been virtually inescapable in recent years thanks to a stint as a judge on ?American Idol,? her talent show with ex-husband Marc Anthony called “Q’Viva! The Chosen,” and a robust portfolio of endorsement deals.

Last year was seen as a comeback for the diva after her stock had plummeted following a rocky couple of years that saw her (literally) stumble at the 2009 AMAs while performing with her bombed single “Louboutins,” getting dropped from longtime label Sony and her film “The Back-up Plan” performing poorly.

But Lopez smartly timed her 2011 comeback effort, “Love?,” with her stint on “Idol.” The album’s lead single, “On the Floor,” entered the charts at No. 9, her highest debut ever, and the album bowed at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 charts. She’s also amassed hundreds of millions of views on YouTube and Vevo, and the video for “Dance Again” with Pitbull is one of the most watched music videos of all time at almost 100 million views.

Lopez is currently on her first headlining world tour (along with Enrique Iglesias), which will play several dates at the Honda Center and Staples Center in August.

If the R&B star things doesn’t work out, Miguel may have a career in wrestling. Miguel’s now infamous leap of fail on stage at the Billboard Music Awards went viral moments after it happened. Then, dozens upon dozens of photo mash ups usually involving Miguel, a wrestler or an unfortunate soul who caught the leg fade have been cracking people up all day.

Miguel has poked fun of himself, tweeting (and eventually) deleting, “rockandrollmademedoit.” But he couldn’t have known what was about to go down on the Internets.

So far we have seen women in neck braces, a deformed giraffe and a pair of Air Miguel kicks, with heels. But the most most foul of all has been the dragging of Chris Bosh into the fray. We’ll draw the line at the one involving K. Michelle, though.

Prince Harry popped into the show before it opened last week to see how a garden close to his heart was growing. He is set to return this week to show his grandmother, patron of show organisers the Royal Horticultural Society, around the B&Q Sentebale Forget-me-not garden that has been created by his charity.

The show garden was created by renowned landscape gardener Jinny Blom for Sentebale, which helps vulnerable children in Lesotho. She said Harry had been ‘passionately’ involved in the design process – even having preliminary drawings sent to him for approval while he was serving in Afghanistan.

The garden is intended to represent the mountainous landscape of Lesotho as well as its people and is also a tribute to Prince Harry’s late mother Princess Diana..

The Chelsea Flower Show will open to the public tomorrow and run for five days. A number of celebrities made the most of the opportunity to have a sneak preview today with those attending including Joanna Lumley, Helen Mirren and Ringo Starr.

To mark the centenary, many gardens draw inspiration from shows of yesteryear – with others looking firmly to the future, including one that reacts to messages sent on Twitter.

The landmark year has also led to the lifting of the usual ban on ornamental gnomes – ordinarily, the Chelsea Flower Show has a strict ban on gnomes ‘and other brightly-coloured mythical creatures’.

More than 500 exhibitors spent the weekend putting the finishing touches to the 15 show gardens, 19 smaller gardens and 150 exhibits that make up the 2013 show.
The annual show has taken place almost every year since 1913 when the Great Spring Show took place at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.

The first show was staged in a single tent and included 244 exhibitors, less than half of today?s numbers. It cost the Royal Horticultural Society £3,365 to stage and made a profit of £88.

However, TV presenter and gardener Alan Titchmarsh has issued a stark warning that the Chelsea Flower Show as people currently know it would cease to exist if more young people did not take up careers in horticulture.

Recent research suggested many young people thought a career in horticulture was only for those who failed academically and that it was an unskilled profession.

He said the industry was ‘rotten’ at PR and that the centenary of the flower show was a chance to demonstrate that those who were involved in horticulture were not thick, dull, unadventurous or incapable of doing anything else.

He said: ‘We have the best jobs in the world – growing plants, designing gardens, managing open spaces, feeding the population, looking after historic trees and famous gardens, conducting scientific research into plant breeding, pests and diseases, collecting plants in far-flung parts of the globe, writing and broadcasting about our passion – the list goes on, 60 different areas at least, by my reckoning.

‘And yet our role is undervalued by Government, by the population and by young people in particular – in every instance because they just do not understand the breadth of what we do and its importance in terms of the wellbeing of the planet and its population.’

The show was held during the first two years of the First World War, but was cancelled in 1917 and 1918.

It was back in full swing by the Roaring 20s, and now came complete with Chelsea tea parties and a resumption of Royal visits, although in 1926 it had to be held a week late because of the General Strike.

In 1937, to mark the coronation year of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, an empire exhibition was held featuring pines from Canada, wattles from Australia, gladioli from East Africa and a prickly pear from Palestine.

The show was cancelled again during the Second World War as the land was needed for an anti-aircraft site, and there was doubt as to whether the show would resume in 1947 in the face of low plant stocks, depleted staff and scarcity of the fuel needed for greenhouses.

But then Royal Horticultural Society president Lord Aberconway was keen for the show to resume as soon as possible and it did go ahead in 1947.
Most members of the Royal Family attended the 1953 show that reflected the celebratory mood of the country as a result of the coronation of the Queen. She was unable to attend herself as a result of a heavy schedule of commitments.

In 2002, Prince Charles designed a garden at the show with Jinny Blom, who this year has designed the B&Q Sentebale garden which supports Prince Harry?s charity.

The show has highlighted changing fashions in horticulture over the last century, from the interest in Japanese and topiary gardens in the early years of the show, through the craze for rock gardens in the war years to the paved back yards and cottage gardens of the 1980s.
More recently it has reflected the enthusiasm for contemporary sculptural gardens.

In one of the more unusual gardens the show has seen, James May, the Top Gear presenter, created a plasticine show garden in 2009 which contained only plasticine flowers. He was presented with a special Plasticine Gold Medal.

RHS president Sue Biggs has promised this year is a show for people who love plants, and the centenary is being marked by the selection of a top bloom from each decade in the last century, with the public being asked to judge which is their favourite.

GNOMES ALLOWED INTO CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW FOR FIRST TIME AS BAN IS LIFTED TO RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITY

The 100 year old Chelsea Flower Show rule book states that no ‘mythical figures’ are allowed in the show’s display gardens.

The official line is that props distract from the flowers themselves. But it is popularly suspected that there has long been a sort of gnome snobbery among the show’s organisers. This year however, the ban on gnomes has been lifted. A number of celebrities and well known names have designed their own gnomes to go on display at this year’s 100th anniversary exhibition.

There’s an Elton John gnome, a Kate and Wills gnome among others. The gnomes will be auctioned off on eBay to raise money for No place like gnome: Garden gnomes, one of which designed by British musician Elton John (centre, with glasses) on show today to raise money for the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, a charity hoping to bring more opportunities for schoolchildren to learn about – and try their hand at – gardening.

COLD WEATHER HAMPERS BLOOMS AS GARDENERS SUGGEST SHOW SHOULD TAKE PLACE LATER IN YEAR

Braving the chill: Flowers have been late to bloom, Chelsea gardeners said, adding that perhaps the event is too early in the year

Braving the chill: Flowers have been late to bloom, Chelsea gardeners said, adding that perhaps the event is too early in the year

Like gardeners across the country, exhibitors at the Chelsea Flower Show have had to contend with the late spring – but it means there will be some unusual blooms on display this week.

Soil temperatures that have been around 2C colder than on average and air temperatures also slightly below normal have forced nurseries to switch their displays to deal with conditions that have delayed flowers, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) said.

Ruth Willmott, who with Frederic Whyte designed the ?9 Billion Conversation? garden for charity Business in the Community focusing on sustainability with a growing population, said: ?It?s been challenging on the flower front. Everything is about four weeks behind. Everyone is struggling.?

But the conditions have been an opportunity to showcase plants which are not normally in flower at this time of year. Old fashioned grandiflora sweet peas, spring flowers such as deadnettle and bleeding hearts are all blooming for the show.

The M&G centenary garden, which marks 100 years of Chelsea, contains rhododendrons which would normally have finished flowering by now, as well as wisteria and a viburnum which are both later than usual.

And apple trees which would normally have flowered in April are still in full bloom in the Homebase ?Sowing the Seeds of Change? garden.

Adam Frost, who designed the ornamental kitchen garden which provides space for a family and for wildlife, said it had been ‘interesting’ dealing with the weather.

?Everything was like Usain Bolt. It was waiting for a starter gun and when it went it was literally – whoosh,? he said.

But he said dealing with the weather was no different from last year?s show, and suggested the event took place at the wrong time of year.

‘It?s the most famous flower show in the world and they have it when you have to deal with these conditions all the time,’ he said.

Guy Barter, RHS chief horticultural adviser, said that despite the few days of warm weather in April, the spring?s late start meant gardens are about two weeks behind normal.

‘Cold soil temperatures mean that seeds are slower to germinate and gardeners must delay planting out tender plants.

‘This means that spring flowers have lasted a lot longer than normal, and there?s been a delay in some of the early summer colour, but with a bit of warm weather and sunshine, it won?t be long before the summer-flowering plants burst into bloom.’

However, the hoped-for sunshine may not be arriving in time for Chelsea itself, with largely unsettled weather conditions forecast for the week.

  • The doll is launched just days after Disney sparked controversy for giving the Brave princess a ‘sexy’ make-over
  • After a 200,000-strong petition was launched against the redesign, Disney removed the revamped image from their website

Target has released a Merida doll who, with her glossy, wavy hair and dainty features, looks more like a Barbie than the feisty Scottish princess from Pixar’s Brave.

The unrecognizable toy is being launched just days after Disney sparked controversy for giving Merida a ‘sexy’ make-over – a decision that was criticized in a 200,000-strong petition, prompting the company to remove the image from their website.

In contrast to Merida’s untamed curls and endearing looks in the movie, this new doll, part of Target’s Ultimate Disney Princess Collection, has a polished, styled haircut, disproportionately thin limbs and nondescript facial features that could seemingly belong to any other princess.

Even the Target doll’s baby blue dress is nothing like the real number she wears in the movie.

Writer Laura Beck expressed her dismay at the doll: ‘This Merida is completely unrecognizable as anything other than a conservatively dressed Barbie with a weird belt on,’ she wrote on Jezebel.

Other critics voiced their opinion that the new depiction of Merida is a bad role model for young Disney fans.

‘This is really annoying,’ wrote one woman of the new, thinner doll.

‘This Merida is unrecognizable as anything other than a Barbie with a weird belt on’

‘They wonder why girls end up freaking out about their weight and looks starting at a young age!’

It’s not the first time a conventionally prettier depiction of the spunky heroine has caused an outcry.

Merida made headlines earlier this month when Disney gave her a ‘sexy’ make-over in the lead-up to her ‘coronation’ as one of the 11 official Disney princesses.

A picture of the updated princess on Disney’s website showed her with a smaller waist, bouncier curls and higher cheekbones, a far cry from the frizzy mop of red hair and authentic teenage looks she sports in the movie.

Merida

Not just a pretty face: Both the Disney and Target make-overs strip Merida of her unique red curls and fuller and more realistic body shape, as well as her trusty bow and arrow

A 200,000-strong petition called for Disney to revoke the ‘sexist’ make-over, which was seen as ‘a tremendous disservice to the millions of children for whom Merida is an empowering role model.’

The original Merida, who rode through the Scottish Highlands shooting arrows with conviction, ‘speaks to girls’ capacity to be change agents in the world rather than just trophies to be admired,’ stated the petition.

Shortly after the petition was launched, Disney quietly removed the controversial picture from their website.

However, executives at the company have since defended the make-over.

Ultimate Disney Princess Collection

Nondescript: The new doll is part of Target’s Ultimate Disney Princess Collection, a line of seven dolls that all have similar facial features and can only be distinguished by their hair color and outfit

‘It’s designed to match the look of the other Disney Princess characters – to make them all appear as if they stepped out of the same world instead of differing across decades of artistic styles,’ explains a statement on Disney news website, InsideTheMagic.

And Catherine Connors, editor in chief of Disney Interactive Family, explained on her blog: ‘These are fancified depictions of Merida, not a new Merida.

‘The gussied up Merida on the coronation invitation is Merida gussied up for one of the most important events of her princess career,’ she continued.

‘That she’s a little more sparkly for the party is not a heresy against her independent and spirited self.’

Something weird went down at Los Angeles International Airport this month. Federal agents seized a bunch of odd items coming in from overseas, including elephant meat, and a dried out monkey carcass, the latter of which was declared a “gift” on customs paperwork.

In less than a week authorities grabbed the items, likely being smuggled into the U.S. for resale.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection field operations director Todd Owen, the unit intercepts a “multitude of remarkable items.”

From the Los Angeles Times:

On May 6, officers at Los Angeles International Airport checked the bag of a 31-year-old man coming in from Nigeria. He declared a number of handbags that turned out to be made of prohibited reptile skin, including 98 of African rock pythons, 19 of monitor lizard, 85 of dwarf crocodile, 179 of cobra and six of puff adder snake.

Three days later, officers examined an item headed for Fresno from Thailand. The package contained almost half a pound of elephant meat, which is banned by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, officials said.

To cap off the regular workweek on May 10, officers stopped a gift that was flagged for North Port, Fla., from Indonesia. That ended up being a dead Macaque monkey, officials said.

The seized cargo has since been transferred over to the  U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

See photos below, and be warned, that tiny dead monkey will spoil your appetite.

Cannes 2013 styleIda Mae Astute/ABC/Getty; Splash News Online

There are a few things we know Carey Mulligan loves on a red carpet: Black and white. Funky jackets. And a bold statement shoe.

And apparently she found an outfit that meets all those criteria so well, she wanted to wear it again before the month was out!

Mulligan first wore this Lanvin suit (featuring an off-white tuxedo jacket, silk pants and a matching top) and Christian Louboutin ?Miyousra? heels at a Good Morning America appearance on May 1.

RELATED PHOTOS: See what everyone else is wearing to Cannes this week!

Then she tossed it into her carry-on (kidding! She probably got it dry-cleaned first!) to wear to a Cannes event this week. She repeated the look right down to the shoes and minimal makeup ? in fact, we almost didn?t believe it was a new photo until we noticed she?d changed up her hairstyle.

The star is no stranger to recycling her red carpet fashion, but in the past she?s usually added a new element to shake the look up a bit. But we kind of love that she?s so attached to this outfit, she couldn?t help but break it out again within a few weeks.

Tell us: Do you like that Mulligan reused the same outfit? Or do you think fancy red carpets should get brand-new looks?

KendrickPowerhouse
Only one person got booed offstage at Power 106 FM?s sold-out Powerhouse concert at Anaheim?s Honda Center on Saturday night. Luckily for the show and its producers, it wasn?t one of the acts.

Halfway through the night?s nonstop lineup of hip-hop acts, the presiding DJs brought out a few local sports heroes, as they often do at Powerhouse. The Dodgers had won at Angels Stadium earlier that day, and before the host could even finish the phrase, ?? From your Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim,? the hissing started. The poor Angels player, Torii Hunter, was only a few hundred yards from his home field and he suffered the wrath of unforgiving fans. Only the arrival of the Dodgers? Matt Kemp saved the darkening mood and brought out a few cheers.

Perhaps L.A. Dodgers fans were in a mood for gloating. But the catcalls might have said something about this year?s Powerhouse and the state of local hip-hop as well. Unlike previous years, which leaned heavily on the insurgent dance-infused pop-rap that dominates today?s airwaves, this year?s Powerhouse was relatively orthodox and old school. With a bill heavy on traditional MCs such as T.I., Young Jeezy, Compton?s Kendrick Lamar and (in regal post-Coachella form) Snoop Dogg, the set suggested that L.A. rap fans, like L.A. sports fans, are interested in some tried-and-true success.

PHOTOS: Powerhouse 2012

The undercard at Powerhouse is rarely worth an early arrival, filled with mini-sets by relative newbies, but this year?s was an entertaining hot mess. Local upstart Kid Ink mined a Drake-ish singing-rapping hybrid style on his hit ?Time of Your Life.? The DC rapper Wale, on a second round of fame after joining Rick Ross? Maybach Music squad, has a refined snarl of a delivery ? but he unfortunately spent most of his set turning his ire on his own DJ (even, at one point encouraging the audience to boo him ? maybe that makes two jeering victims for the night). The cackling rapper YG reaffirmed his claim to the least classy morning-after anthem ever penned as he performed his hit ?Toot it and Boot It.?

The important part of the night truly started at Lamar?s set, and the 25-year-old proved he?s at an interesting juncture in rap stardom today. In the ?90s and early 2000s, to be Dr. Dre?s protege was to get the keys to a mansion with a Champagne moat. But despite a full-court press from nearly every serious figure in hip-hop, Lamar is working to break through to pop stardom. But he lived up to expectations here, roughing up his vocals and taking victory-lap trots through the songs ?A.D.H.D.? and ?The Recipe.?

Young Jeezy and T.I., each unimpeachable stalwarts of rap radio for the last decade, elaborated their tales of Atlanta drug culture in different ways. Jeezy, who relies more on rapping than his blustery ad-libs on his latest, ?TM:103 Hustlerz Ambition,? softened his imposing presence a bit on ?SupaFreak? and ?Leave You Alone,? on which he was joined by Ne-Yo. T.I. has always leaned poppier, and though he alluded to his recent gun-running woes (?I had to take care of some things first?), his set was elastic and snappy — and his guest MC, the Australian expat Iggy Azalea, made a worthy novice arena appearance.

The show?s final third seemed to misplace its priorities a bit. Snoop Dogg, fresh off playing to 140,000 people over two Coachella weekends, has become the éminence grise of the Power 106 universe. He could quit releasing new music entirely for the rest of his Doggfather reign and still headline shows like this on the strength of his catalog and slithery cool alone. So it felt weird that Roc Nation?s J. Cole and the local newbie Tyga, each young MCs figuring out their aesthetic, could headline over him.

The latter?s Lil Wayne cameo helped his bona fides, and Tyga?s clattering tune ?Rack City? is a hit in any decade. But these days, Snoop seems to be aiming past mere rapping into the rare air of cultural transcendence. That?ll play in any arena.

Historically, T.I. and Lil Wayne collaborations are very solid. They added another to the cannon with “Ball” in 2012, and return today with a jamming record called “Wit Me.”

Fans received a sampling when the song was previewed last week. It’s apparent that the duo aims for summer anthem status now that hear the record in its entirety. The Kang and Weezy take a beat with hypnotic synths and bouncy drums to task, and do a solid job trading potent bars in the process.

“Wit Me” will promote T.I. and Wayne’s upcoming , which has seen a few changes since the initial announcement of the show bill. Most notably, Future has been replaced by 2 Chainz and French Montana.

In an interview with MTV, Tip explained that there was no love lost for the “Karate Chop” rapper. “It was Future, something happened and Future pulled ? he disassociated himself from the tour for whatever reason, and it’s still love ? ain’t no problem with that. Now Chainz on there.”

Expect a visual treatment for “Wit Me” to premiere tonight at 10 p.m. EST on VEVO, as the song will be available on iTunes at midnight.

Hear “Wit Me” below.

There’s no denying that the fashion industry is fickle, with younger models constantly usurping each other.

But Bar Refaeli has proved that there’s no one to rival her just yet, showing off her supermodel credentials in newly released campaign shots for the Escada?s new Especially Escada Elixir fragrance.

With her trademark blonde hair blowing out behind her and wearing a billowing chiffon gown, the 27-year-old is pictured walking through a plush green garden in the new shoot.

The fun-loving star, who has been modelling since she was a baby, proved that she’s still got that same star power that she’s always had and is still attracting the big name contracts.

Bar has recently been announced as the new face of the brand’s fragrance, which is a re-working of the popular Especially Escada, which launched in 2011.

And showing just how versatile she is, the Sports Illustrated cover girl ditched her usual sultry image in favour of an ethereal and elegant look.

While she’s better know for posing in her swimwear, Bar managed to look just as striking in the floor-length pink gown, covering up her famous figure entirely.

In the new snap, the catwalk star carries a pair of gold stilettos in one hand as she turns to look back at the camera from over her shoulder.

The jet-setting model has been spending time in her native Israel over the last few weeks, making the most of catching up with friends and family.

And the supermodel has been keeping her fans in the loop when it comes to her lifestyle, tweeting pictures of her trip back home for all of her followers to see.

In one inexplicable snap, Bar is wearing a pink Superwoman cape, under the caption: ‘Who run the world? GIRLS!’

A few days before she showed off her more active side as she posted a photo of herself running into the sea with a surfboard, writing: ‘Surf up.’

On Saturday the star – who is clearly enjoying her time in Tel Aviv – posted a steamy but artistic topless photograph of herself on a beach.

The blonde-haired baby did her first modelling work at just eight-months-old. After a break while she wore braces on her teeth she resumed modelling at 15 and was immediately featured in campaigns for the fashion brands Castro and Pilpel, also starring in a commercial for Milky.

Versatile: She might be better known for her swimwear shoots, but Bar has proved that she can turn her hand to anything

Though Kim Kardashians hasn’t given birth yet, one person from her past has already declared that he won’t be congratulating the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star. Football star Reggie Bush, whom she dated for three years, revealed to Life and Style that he won’t be in touch with his ex.

According to Bush, who recently became a dad earlier this month with girlfriend Lilit Avagyan, he didn’t hear from Kim or anyone from the Kardashian family when his daughter was born. “I haven’t spoken to them,” he said.

“I haven’t been worried about anything else or on anything in the past,” he added. “Just the present and the future. I’ve just been focusing on my little girl and my family. That’s it really. I’ve been enjoying my life and this opportunity. All my focus has been on that.”

Meanwhile, legal woes are far from over for the Kardashian family. Last month, Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and Rob Jr. teamed up to sue Ellen Pearson, the woman was married to Robert Kardashian when he died and who sold portions of Robert’s diary to the tabloids. TMZ has learned that Peasron claims the Kardashians do not stand a chance in court and is asking a judge to dismiss the case. No word yet on whether her request has been granted.

If you weren?t born with Hollywood bombshell hair (and uh, by the way, most of the Hollywood bombshells weren?t even born with Hollywood bombshell hair ? they fake it), this product is for you?

When it comes to hair extensions, the most important thing is that you shouldn?t be able to tell where your natural strands stop and the faux pieces start. These Bardot clip-ins have that covered: They come in six multi-tonal shades that are specially dip-dyed to blend seamlessly with all hues. (If you have questions about which color is right for you, Tweet a pic of your hair to @StyleWatchMag and @Joyus and we?ll advise!)

Shop more great beauty and fashion products!

And because the little clips (which are incredibly easy to use) are covered up by the extensions, no one will ever know you?re wearing faux locks. Plus, you can curl or flatiron the hair for an even more believable look. Yeah, they?re that good.

Enter STYLE15 at checkout if you?re a first-time Joyus shopper to get a 15% discount.
