The Show

"Music is the weapon of the future." So declared Nigerian singer Fela Kuti as he used song to rally against his government's oppressive policies. Culture as an implement of war? Given music's power over human emotions and its potential as a universal language, perhaps this notion is not so far-fetched.

Music plays a critical role in shaping our behavior both as individuals and members of society. It serves simultaneously as a vehicle for and an end product of different cultures; indeed it may be a sort of language for communicating emotion and other nonverbal information. The Human Chorus explores all these facets by looking at music's place in society as viewed by its listeners, its critics, its promoters, and its creators. Each episode features a single topic illustrated by one or more interviews along with some of the music under discussion.

The Human Chorus is a weekly public radio series being produced in association with public radio station KALW in San Francisco.

The People

Producer/Host Jonathan Heuer's take on music is informed by, in no particular order:

• many thousands of ear-hours absorbing music from a variety of sources including passing cars; movie soundtracks; the record collections of parents and sibling; and sundry FM radio stations on three continents
• formal training in biology and an ongoing fascination with the question of the evolution of human behavior
• the conviction that music is part of a sticky web of culture that joins humans near and far in ways that may be impossible to unravel with all the tools of science, but we can certainly try
