Snow White and the Huntsman is not only action-packed, it?s fashion-packed! Nine-time Academy Award-nominated costume designer Colleen Atwood, who managed the movie?s innumerable looks, recently spilled all of the details on the film?s fierce wardrobe to FabSugar.

Kristen Stewart?s Snow White has countless fighting scenes, so it was important for Atwood to choose practical looks for her. ?I knew from the start she had to have shoes she could run in,? Atwood explained. ?[And] since she falls down and goes ass-over-elbows a million times, I had to have some kind of legging to cover her up.?

In the beginning of the film Stewart wears a long dress, but Atwood made sure to layer it with leggings underneath. ?When the huntsman cuts [the long dress] off it still looks really great ? like a tunic over the leggings,? she said. ?It gives her a great silhouette but she?s able to do action.?

Charlize Theron?s Queen Ravenna looks were less dependent on practicality, but still difficult to create. ?[Her] wedding gown took three weeks [to make] with four people working on it,? the stylist revealed. ?It?s a lot of handwork.?

And since Theron?s costumes took so long to manufacture, the actress didn?t get to try them on until right before she shot her scenes. ?It was intense, but it went really well,? Atwood said.

Catch all of the intricate costumes when the film hits theaters on Friday, June 1. Tell us: Are you planning to see Snow White and the Huntsman?

Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby blames “that gun” for Trayvon Martin’s death in February — forget racism or self-defense.

“I’m a person who believes that that gun, that gun, all around this United States — when a person has a gun sometimes their mind clicks that this thing is, it will win arguments and straighten people out, and then in the wrong hands and the wrong mind, it’s death,” he said on CNN in an interview that aired Sunday.

He said he wasn’t talking about having a gun for self-defense in the home, but made the point “that when you tell me that you’re going to protect the neighborhood that I live in, I don’t want you to have a gun.

“I want you to be able to see something, report it, and get out of the way. … I don’t want you to get hurt, and I don’t want to hurt anyone.”

Deciding racism is involved in a situation — Cosby never mentioned George Zimmerman by name — doesn’t solve anything, he said. If a person is scared to death, whether he’s a racist matters little if he’s carrying a firearm at the time, Cosby said.

The stand-up comic beloved for his well-known routines as well as his turn on “The Cosby Show” lost his son Ennis Cosby to gun violence in January 1997. Mikael Markhasev was sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing the 27-year-old during a holdup while Ennis was fixing a flat tire near a freeway offramp.

Martin, 17, was fatally shot by Zimmerman while walking to his father’s house from a nearby convenience store. The 28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer had called police to report Martin as a suspicious person and followed him. After Martin’s death in a fight that ensued, Zimmerman claimed self-defense.

After national outrage over the local police department’s allegedly insufficient investigation of the crime and failure to make an arrest, Zimmerman was booked into jail last Wednesday on second-degree murder charges brought by a special prosecutor assigned to the case.

It looks like Britney’s comeback is about to get a whole lot bigger. At FOX’s upfront presentation yesterday, Simon Cowell officially announced that Britney Spears would be joining The X Factor this fall as one of the new judges to replace Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger. (Demi Lovato has also been hired.) And now comes word that the “Hit Me Baby One More Time” singer’s presence will be felt on another FOX program: Glee.

Britney Spears and Demi Lovato Officially Join ‘The X Factor’ >>>

Glee first paid tribute to Spears near the start of season 2. And now EW is reporting that she will be getting yet another tribute episode, this time in season 4. More specifically, the second episode, which will cover eight songs. If you’ll recall, she made a brief cameo the first time around with Brittany S. Pierce. And as of right now, she won’t guest star again, but the show’s producers are hoping that’ll change.

According to EW, “The reason for the Spears hour is because the network is so excited about the pairing of a Spears/X Factor with Glee on Thursday nights.” So this pretty much confirms that it is the network pushing the tribute and will not be done solely for creative purposes. The first tribute may have received high ratings, but that episode was unanimously panned and criticized by fans across the board as being just an outlet to present a sort of endless loop of music videos.

But on the other side, it is a smart move by FOX to create more buzz for both The X Factor and Glee. Let’s just hope the music serves a purpose, especially considering we’ll be seeing Rachel, Kurt and Finn in New York starting a whole new chapter in their lives.

Speaking of season 4, it was mentioned in the same report by EW that Kate Hudson’s character will be a mentor to Rachel: “Hudson’s role will have her singing but will also be very dance-heavy.” This makes sense, considering that Sarah Jessica Parker’s character (announced at the same time as Hudson yesterday) will be mentoring Kurt.

Are you looking forward to another Britney Spears tribute episode? Or are you disappointed that it was done solely for marketing purposes, and wary that it will churn out another weak episode?

Howard Stern‘s first night on “America’s Got Talent” started off with a bang … he was articulate … he was funny … and he totally made fun of a male stripper for having a small wiener.

Howard entered the “AGT” studio in Los Angeles to a thunderous ovation … impressed with a series of real, thoughtful critiques. He even had a touching moment with a father-daughter act … praising them after an emotional performance.

But not everyone got a piece of Howard’s nice side — some stripper magician guy tasted some of Stern’s wrath after what could only be described as a terribly disappointing performance.

“I had a lot of hope for you … I was really rooting for you … I wanted to see some magic and all I saw was a guy with his pants off … and a rather small package.”

After ripping on the dude’s “man boobs” … Stern added, “Don’t feel bad, I’m in the same boat my friend.”

This episode decided to gut my heart and drown my lungs in a miserable cloud of New England/Southern rain.

First, I officially hate myself since I watched Gossip Girl, even though I know it would torture me. It did. Then, I began Hart of Dixie and knew that this episode was doomed based on the initial act. Thirdly, as I almost finished draft numero uno on my computer, it decides to randomly shut down and not save anything. So, I’m pretty emotionally spent in addition to having an illness that resembles the plague.

The reason I thought it necessary to explain my bad day is because Hart of Dixie is escapism from bad days likes these. I can watch it and feel happy. And I did for most of the episode, with the exceptions of the beginning and the end. Because that’s when this show decided to gut me like some Bluebell fish.

Marriage Madness

We start with a dream with our dear boy George, bright and happy and too shiny. He’s happy as he marries Lemon … and Zoe … and Lavon. Please god, let this be a nightmare, because then this show has entered another Southern taboo known as polygamy. Thankfully, this is a nightmare. I should have seen it then that there was no good end.

George then awakes on his wedding day to find that every conceivable thing has gone wrong. But he doesn’t know that yet. He begins setting everything up for Lemon’s wedding under the stars when he runs into Zoe. Awkward. George didn’t know that Zoe was staying in town (which makes me appreciate that the show used the I’m-leaving card last week). Regardless, George continues on.

Until Tom says that his knee is tingling. Excuse me? I don’t speak Southern nerd, even if I do love Tom. Lavon translates (Cause we all know he’s a secret nerd) that Tom’s tingling knee and other omens bring an impending doom: a storm. Lavon removes George and Lemon’s registration permit to save the wedding even if George sees it as sabotage. Because of this, the wedding can still happen, albeit inside.

Woe Show

Zoe tries to rectify her strained and broken friendship with Wade, who still hates her for one reason or another. I believe this time he specified because she lost him money that otherwise would have been used to open a bar. Zoe, in her Zoeness, blows out the power with her new coffee maker because remember in the beginning of the season when that happened a lot? Good times.

Later, Zoe picks up Wade to save him from the storm. However, a storm in the South is way different from a storm in the North. We get it, show: Bluebell is not New York. Naturally, Zoe and Wade run into a barn where there are goats.

Of course, put these two in a room for any period of time and the two will fight. Zoe calls out Wade for having feelings and then admits that she denies her own feelings for him, causing Wade to stomp his heels and storm out into the storm.

He returns later, of course, claiming that any feelings for Zoe are misguided sexual frustrations; she was the first girl who said no to Wade, that wouldn’t sleep with him. I am not surprised by this, honestly; I’ve seen Wade half naked on this show. While the sexual tension heats up, the two ignore it to go help a baby goat. Aww.

Out in the “storm” (good job, crew!), the baby goat’s neck is caught in a barbed wire. Guys, I got so nervous here. I know that there are, like, animal safety laws and such, but I felts so nervous for the little guy/girl. My nervousness subsides when Wade takes off his shirt to help save the goat, though. Good times.

After saving the little goat and getting soaked, the two enter the barn to play doctor! Not that dirty, but still sexually charged! Wade mends Zoe’s back wound, thereby playing out the injured solider routine that many lovers fall into. Before any physical action can happen, they are rescued by local law enforcement, who drop them off at their house.

At the house and in the car, the two sweetly exchange some powerful looks before retreating to get ready for the wedding. But the two cannot control themselves and give in to some wild and, from the looks of it, hot loving.

The Rest is Mess

George, Lavon and the whole town practically are trying to scramble what’s left of a wedding into the old, crumbling firehouse. It isn’t bad, except the roof is caving, the cake is gone, the band hasn’t shown up, George’s best man is gone, the flowers are ruined and need I say more?

Yet there’s something nice about the whole town coming together for two people who are both beloved and kind of despicable. Luckily, Lavon and George seem to patch some things up by banding together to give Lemon her dream wedding. But it isn’t enough for Boy George.

George is kind of devastated that Zoe isn’t leaving, but staying. Odd, no? But he explains it in the final minutes of the finale to Lemon, looking gorgeous and conservative in her wedding gown. They try to make it work and it doesn’t. He leaves for New York and that really strains them. Lemon takes up with Lavon and George takes up with Zoe. And they fall in love with other people, enough to damage their current relationship. George calls off the wedding he had been so desperate to keep alive.

So Lemon, in justified rage, punches George. And George sees to it to march on over to Zoe’s house.

Zoe, still in bed and glowy with Wade, is kind of blind sighted that George technically chose Zoe. This is the part that gets unreal again. Zoe’s left with the decision between Wade and George and it will kill me no matter what she chooses. Wade, George, or she’ll pull a Kelly Taylor and choose Zoe.

This finale kind of gutted me. Maybe it’s because I only really remember the lasting impression instead most of the happy and enjoyable episode. Maybe it’s because I felt for Lemon because she’s wanted this forever, and right as it happens the universe decides it’s time to enact a season’s worth of karma on Lemon. Maybe it’s because there is no win-win situation for what Zoe chooses to do here.

Regardless, I’m gutted now, but just beyond relieved that there will be another season. I think I might have collapsed had it been the series finale. See you guys next season, Hart of Dixie fans.

Big future: Reporter Alice-Azania Jarvis and dog Jake have taken part in a dog dancing training class following the success of Pudsey on Britain's Got Talent

Big future: Reporter Alice-Azania Jarvis and dog Jake have taken part in a dog dancing training class following the success of Pudsey on Britain’s Got Talent

A balmy evening in South-West London, and I?m trying to convince a handsome chap called Jake to cha-cha-cha.

I?m hoping that as a couple we have the potential to dance in perfect harmony, and to encourage him I?ve brought along his favourite food (cocktail sausages) and put on his favourite CD (Strictly Dance Classics).

But as I shuffle round the dance floor it?s clear pretty quickly that he isn?t keen. The chemistry just isn?t there.

But then perhaps I shouldn?t be surprised: Jake is a dog ? a borrowed Blue Merle border collie to be precise ? and I am here with my reluctant dance partner in the hope that a little of the stardust of what you might call the Pudsey Effect will rub off on us.

Just in case you?ve been living on Mars for the past couple of months, let me explain that Pudsey is the irrepressible border collie-bichon frise-Chinese crested cross who, along with his 17-year-old owner Ashleigh Butler, has become a national sensation after delighting both audiences and the judges on Britain?s Got Talent.

After winning the final in some style on Saturday night, they?re now predicted to make £10?million through public appearances and endorsements.

Such has been the response to their unashamedly feelgood act that there is already something of a boom in the number of people hoping to discover a hitherto latent talent in their own mutts.

So just how easy is it to jive together, or encourage an animal to jump through a ?hoop? formed by your arms, just like the fabulous Pudsey?

There are several DVDs devoted to the subject, and classes can be found just about everywhere from Cornwall to County Durham. So I decided to pay a visit to one in Twickenham run by Kathleen Stubbings, who?s been ?doggie dancing? for the best part of a decade. Six years ago, she founded an academy to share her talents.

2144519

Winners: Ashleigh Buter and her dog Pudsey won this year’s Britain’s Got Talent

Impressive: Ashleigh and Pudsey wowed the viewers and the judges with their routine to the Mission: Impossible theme. But could your dog perform the same moves?

Impressive: Ashleigh and Pudsey wowed the viewers and the judges with their routine to the Mission: Impossible theme. But could your dog perform the same moves?

With me in the class are six other dog-lovers ? including 15-year-old Lucy Hankey (who has come with her border collie Sam) and 66-year-old retired occupational therapist Chris Young (with Tod, another border collie).

Kathleen, who sports rather risque jazzy pink lipstick and spiky blonde hair, is clearly used to keeping order among humans and canines.

?Quiet!? she yaps to a barking beagle,  turning to its owner with a firm: ?Shhh!?

Doggie dancing ? or ?Heelwork to Music? to use its official title ? has its own organisational body (yes really), the Paws ?n? Music Association. And you thought it was just a teenager having some fun on a reality show.

In 2008 it was even introduced at Crufts ? to howls of disapproval from the competition?s more, shall we say, traditional participants.

Indeed, Britain boasts the world champion. In 2010, Kath Hardman and her seven-year-old border collie Amber stole the show at the inaugural Heelwork to Music World Championships in Denmark. They danced to the Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand duet No More Tears. That?s right, Pudsey?s not even the best doggie dancer in Britain!

Example: Kath Hardman gives a heel work to music display with dog Ginnie at Crufts, Birmingham in 2007

Reporter Alice Azania Jarvis and dog Jake attempt a 'heel work to music' trick

Example: Kath Hardman gives a heel work to music display with dog Ginnie at Crufts, Birmingham in 2007, before Alice attempts a similar trick during the training class

(You can almost hear Simon Cowell?s brain ticking over with plans for a nationwide tour boasting a whole cast of Pudsey-a-likes.)

?Dancing with a dog is fantastic fun,? says Kennel Club secretary Caroline Kisko. ?And Britain?s Got Talent raises its profile even more.?

It took root as a serious discipline in 1990 when a two-time Crufts obedience champion named Mary Ray introduced music to her heelwork (a kind of obedience training where the dog performs different moves following its owner?s, ahem, lead).

Hi there! Dancing dog Missey appears to wave to the photographer at the training class

Hi there! Dancing dog Missey appears to wave to the photographer at the training class

To Berlin?s 1980s classic Take My Breath Away, she and her Tervueren sheep dog, Roxy, performed the country?s first human-canine dance routine at a demonstration in Bedford.

It was swiftly followed by another, this time to Survivor?s anthem Eye Of The Tiger with her collie, Red Hot Toddy.

In America, predictably, some dog owners took the idea one step further. They introduced flashy costumes and acrobatic canine leaps, and called their version ?freestyle?.

Combine the two approaches, and you have the fun, frivolous but deeply impressive dance routines put on by Ashleigh and Pudsey on Britain?s Got Talent.

Something tells me I have a long way to go before Jake and I can master anything like those, however. And spangly costumes are definitely out of the question.

The good news is that I?ve managed to get Jake to stand on his hind legs. The secret: a small sausage held in between your thumb and finger and he?s a lot keener to strain up to reach it. Ashleigh prefers a bit of ham sandwich to keep Pudsey keen.

But despite a positive start, I know we?ve got some way to go to reach Kathleen?s target of at least half a dozen tricks in a routine.

To compete ? even at local level ? in official heelwork to music competitions, beginners need to fill two-and-a-half minutes of music with choreographed moves.

At the more advanced level at which Ashleigh and Pudsey regularly compete, you need to fill five.

And there are no sausages ? or ham sandwiches ? allowed during a contest.

Our instructor Kathleen starts us off slowly, gradually introducing one move after the next. And to help us see how we are shaping up, there?s even a ballet-studio-style mirror running along one side of the hall.

So what are we attempting? Well, there?s the twist, where the dog spins around as if chasing its tail. And there?s the head-nod, where it bobs its head in time to the beat.

But the most fun is the weave, where you use your hand to lure the animal around you, first one way, then the next.

Popular: Alice was joined by six others and their pooches for the class

Popular: Alice was joined by six others and their pooches for the class

Then, with a quick flick of the wrist, you indicate that the dog should go through your legs and out the other side. Midway through, you press your legs gently together to trap the dog between them, and then you both turn in tandem. And hey presto! You?re doing the weave.

One person who?s not having any trouble with all this is young Lucy.

With her long, blonde hair and model looks, she appears more suited to the catwalk than doggie-dancing. But then she?s no ingenue ? having twice won Crufts, though not with her collie Sam.

Lucy is especially thrilled by Ashleigh?s new-found fame. The two are friends, even competing against one another from time to time.

?She?s a couple of years older than me,? says Lucy. ?So usually she comes first and I come second.?

?It?s great to see the kids getting into it,? agrees trainer Kathleen. ?Ashleigh really is a leading light.?

Ideas: Simon Cowell's brain might be ticking over with plans for a nationwide tour boasting a whole cast of Pudsey-a-likes

Ideas: Simon Cowell’s brain might be ticking over with plans for a nationwide tour boasting a whole cast of Pudsey-a-likes

It does all beg one question, though. Why, on a lovely spring evening when they could be doing any number of more normal activities, are these people so keen to get their dogs to dance? After all, it?s hardly the most natural thing in the world. Looking in the mirror, I realise just how silly I appear.

Well, for one thing, it?s good general training for the dog.

Teach a dog to dance, says Kathleen, and house-training becomes a piece of cake. ?It?s the best discipline there is ? it focuses the dog?s mind.?

It?s good exercise, too ? for the dogs at least: Lucy reckons that 20 minutes of dancing is the equivalent of at least an hour?s walkies.

But it?s also very good for us humans. So good, in fact, that the Kennel Club recently launched a keep-fit programme based around the concept.

Get Fit With Fido is such a success that weight-loss guru Rosemary Conley has endorsed it. ?I know people who have lost over a stone exercising with their dog like that,? enthuses the Kennel Club?s secretary Caroline.

Most of all, it?s fun. Faintly ridiculous, yes, and rather eccentric ? but utter fun. Even for those of us ? well, me ? who can barely get our dogs to sit when we tell them, the experience is rather uplifting.

Sue Hudson has been dancing with her collie Sapphire for only a few months, but already she proudly lists the moves they?ve mastered: the paw-lift, when the dog raises a paw to meet your upraised hand, the bow, when it touches its nose to the floor, and the pivot, where the dog turns on top of a stool.

Chris Young, meanwhile, is here for only her second lesson with a collie named Tod. ?You can?t worry about what you look like, it?s just about having fun,? says Chris.

Of course when the experts perform, it?s a different story. So precise and skilful are they that the dancing is almost a science. Choreographing a successful routine combines flair, accuracy and a even a bit of biological knowledge.

Kathleen says: ?It?s crucial to take into account factors such as your dog?s age, breed, and build.?

Talent: Ashleigh and Pudsey's cha-cha is so impressive is because of six-year-old Pudsey's remarkably straight back when he stands up on his hind legs, and it has led the pair to great success

Standing up for Britain: Pudsey and Ashleigh on Britain's Got Talent dancing up a storm

Standing on his own two feet: Pudsey illustrates one of his many tricks that helped him win the talent contest and possibly land £10m

One reason Ashleigh and Pudsey?s cha-cha is so impressive is because of six-year-old Pudsey?s remarkably straight back when he stands up on his hind legs.

?It means he can stand tall, and match Ashleigh?s posture.?

But if Pudsey were a bit older, he wouldn?t have the strength for the move. Too young, and he?d risk damaging his development.

Kathleen explains: ?Dogs? bones don?t stop growing until around 12 months, so forcing them to stand upright before then could be harmful.?

At Crufts, the stringent age restrictions take such factors into account. Dogs must be over 12 or 18 months, depending on their category.

When doggie dancing (sorry, heelwork to music) was introduced at Crufts, critics feared such antics would undermine the event?s credibility. Indeed, the British and Irish Dog Breeds Preservation Trust snootily wrote off the new category as ?all teeth and hair? ? rather like Simon Cowell, in fact.

This unlikely feud in the doggie world lingers on, with Kathleen saying she?s ?sick? of people trying to present the ?sport? in a negative light. Were she and her doggie dancing colleagues not so evidently hurt, it would all be rather comical.

But then I suspect they will get their revenge next year when ? thanks to Pudsey ? Crufts is overrun by hundreds of wannabe doggie dancers. That?ll annoy the snobs.

So how did I fare with Jake? Let?s just say that after an hour of effort and cajoling, it wasn?t Jake that was chasing his tail. We?re certainly not ready to take on Ashleigh and Pudsey .?.?. but who knows what a little more practice (and a lot more sausages) can achieve?

Demi Lovato Blonde HairCourtesy Demi Lovato

New job, new hair color! At the FOX upfronts in New York City on Monday, Demi Lovato was announced as one of the new X Factor judges ? and debuted new blonde locks, too.

Before her trip to New York, the singer popped into West Hollywood?s Nine Zero One Salon Friday night, where her hair was transformed from brunette to blonde and blonde extensions were added. According to a source, the starlet said this is the lightest her hair has ever been ? and she wants to keep it this way for her upcoming tour, which kicks off in Del Mar, Calif., next month.

Last year, Lovato tried red hair temporarily, going blonde several months later and eventually returning to her natural brunette hue.

At Monday?s upfronts ? where Britney Spears was introduced as a new judge, too ? Lovato expressed her excitement about the new job. ?I am totally stoked to be here,? she told the crowd. ?I?m excited to represent my generation and I?m ready to find the winner.?

The X Factor, which also stars Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid, returns to FOX later this year.

The days of poetic love letters are long gone and these days love-struck singles must compose witty, engaging missives short enough to translate over text message.

But according to one men’s interest website, for single males, writing the perfect text to a woman can be a puzzling and infuriating task.

In a recent survey, a majority of participants agreed it created more of an issue than approaching a woman in the first place and even knowing what to say after that awkward first kiss.

No Shakespeare: According to a new survey by TSB Magazine, men find it increasingly difficult to know what to say in a text message to a woman

No Shakespeare: According to a new survey by TSB Magazine, men find it increasingly difficult to know what to say in a text message to a woman

PR Web reports that TSB Magazine, a website providing sex and dating advice for men, presented readers a list of traditionally confusing aspects of dating.

Of all the most obvious potential pitfalls, when to text and what to write took top place as the most hazardous areas when it came to dating.

Thanks to modern technology, flirting via text between dates now creates yet more opportunity through which potential paramours can hope to impress each other.

But a poorly composed message, or a misunderstood punctuation mark can sabotage even the most innocent affairs and according to TSB readers, the decision of what to write when can be a confusing game.

Even too many messages can be a deal breaker when it comes to keeping a girl interested, according to TSB Magazine founder Bobbi Rio, who has made quite a business of positioning himself as an expert on the subject.

Of the candidates who took part in the survey, 32 per cent voted texting as their number one issue while 22 per cent admitted that knowing how to rescue an awkward conversation with an attractive woman was a significant hurdle.

Following closely behind, 18 per cent of men complained that is is often hard to know when and how to ‘lean in’ for the uncomfortable first kiss and negotiate the cringe-inducing conversation that precedes and follows the moment.

Surprisingly, most men showed no issue with the notion of sidling up to a lady and initiating conversation and only 12 per cent confessed that summoning up the courage to do so presented a challenge.

So worrisome is the pressure of creating the perfect text, Mr Rio has published more than a dozen books already purporting to hold the key to attracting a woman’s attention and have her falling at a man’s feet.

In his latest, Magnetic Messaging, Mr Rio describes the ‘key-lock’ sequence, a series of three short messages that he believes is a sure-fire way to guarantee a triumph.

Among other ‘useful’ tips, Mr Rio insists his followers never write anything to tune of: ‘How’s your day going?’, ‘What you up 2?’ or ‘Hey.’

Let’s hope there’s more to his theory than that.

Booker T and the MGs, whose bassist Duck Dunn died on Sunday
Who was Donald “Duck” Dunn? Among many other things, he was the creator of one of the great basslines of the last half century, the propellent run that pushes “Time Is Tight,” Booker T & the M.G.’s classic 1969 instrumental, into the stratosphere.

Dunn, who died Sunday in Tokyo at age 70, may often have been overshadowed by bandmates organist Booker T. Jones and guitarist Steve Cropper, but remove the bassline from “Time Is Tight” and dozens of other soul classics that he played on in the 1960s, when Memphis, Tenn.,  was the hub of rhythm & blues and Stax was its shining light, and much of the momentum that pushes those songs vanishes.

Dunn understood how to remain as the rudder, guiding songs while adding just enough flair to create waves. You can hear it on Otis Redding’s version of “Respect,” where, unlike on Aretha Franklin’s better-known version, Dunn’s bass roams around down below, creating a turbulent bottom-end swirl. His funky bassline on “Hip Hug-Her” arrives with a fuzzy distortion whose presence echoed through funk jams in the decade following its arrival in 1967; it and other Dunn lines foretold the more groove-oriented R&B of the early 1970s as practiced by Curtis Mayfield, Sly & the Family Stone and Funkadelic.

One wonder of music is the often magical ways in which it makes its way through the culture and into our ears. For example, I first heard “Time Is Tight” not through the classic Booker T version, but on “Black Market Clash,” the Clash’s 1980 EP.

The Clash’s version is faster and has a little bit of a post-disco feel to it. I heard it while living just up the Mississippi from Memphis in southern Illinois, and despite the proximity, the song had to travel across the Atlantic and into the ears of a bunch of punks before making its way back to the heartland and denting my consciousness. Ever since, “Time Is Tight” has been one of my jams, a song that I turn up every time it comes on.

And while there’s no denying the genius of Jones, Cropper and drummer Al Jackson Jr., one listen to the the spare precision of Dunn on another Booker T classic, “Slim Jenkins’ Place,” from their 1967 album “Hip Hug-Her,” is to appreciate how much the bassist’s tone guided the band. It illustrates Dunn’s quiet impact — how a bassist can be a model of restraint while still transforming the entire feel of a song.

Rufus Wainwright
Rufus Wainwright is a virtuoso ironist, and he came right out of the gate with it at the Orpheum on Saturday. For the a cappella opener ?Candles,? he sang, ?I tried to do all that I can, but the churches have run out of candles,? while surrounded by dozens of lighted votives. It was a good joke in the midst of quite a scene — the Orpheum stage wreathed in flickering darkness and hymnal harmonies.

Of course, when the lights kicked on, Wainwright was wearing gold pants and cheap sunglasses befitting a Serbian drug runner. Try as he might, be can?t be austere for too long without winking. But all the better for us — Saturday?s set caught one of the finest and most idiosyncratic singer-songwriters working today at his most flirty and commanding.

Wainwright?s new Mark Ronson-produced album, ?Out of the Game,? was welcomed as a warm and spritzy return to form after a long stretch of operatic and quite serious records. That album was the backstop for Saturday?s show, and even those raised on the bleary downtown suites of ?Poses? had to give into it. ?Out of the Game? is an album of devotion that never tries too hard to win you over, and the bit of Vegas torchiness that he brought to the velvety ?Song of You,? ?Respectable Dive? and lite-funk ?Barbara? made the solid bones of his songwriting feel even more masterful.

The title track, a dating-scene vet?s grateful look in the rear view mirror at that life, had an Eagles-y, canyon country wistfulness that made the sentiment totally believable.  That’s even more true when one considers it next to ?Montauk,? a guileless welcome-to-the-word ode to his young daughter, in which he promises, ?One day you?ll come to Montauk and see your dad wearing a kimono / and your other dad pruning roses.? Who knew that Rufus Wainwright of all people would make a great dad-rocker?

The set came just days after President Obama?s endorsement of same-sex marriage, which lent an even more celebratory feel to Wainwright?s songs about kicking his shoes off and committing. But Wainwright?s music has always been in dialogue with his famous family?s catalog, and several covers of his mom’s and dad?s work connected generations.

The night featured three songs by his mother, the late Kate McGarrigle. Two were delivered by members of Rufus Wainwright’s  backing band, including Teddy Thompson?s plainspoken read on ?Saratoga Summer Song? and Krystle Warren?s more explosive ?I Don?t Know.? Wainwright choked back reservations about performing ?On My Way to Town,? claiming that he plays it way better in his house over breakfast but never feels right doing it live. He shouldn?t have worried — the simplicity of the piano arrangement belied the timelessness of the song, one he clearly felt in his marrow from childhood. And his version of his father Loudon?s ?One Man Guy? let the low register of his voice resonate with the romance of self-imposed loneliness.

But those heartfelt odes were leavening moments in an otherwise regal pop show. The droll disco vamp of ?Bitter Tears? and the Springsteen-swinging sax riffs of ?14th Street? proved he could do pretty much anything, and even his cake-frosting singles have a lifetime of songwriting skill underneath. When he ribbed guitarist Thompson for not wearing his required sunglasses for the big set closer, it didn?t seem to matter if the church had run out of candles. Wainwright had brought his own fireworks.

Chronicling Her Majesty’s 60 glorious years on the throne, the series also captures six decades of momentous events and social change in Britain and abroad.

From post-war austerity, the Suez crisis and rock ?n? roll of the 1950s, to the terrible events of 9/11, the global economy in meltdown and the wedding of William and Kate in the new Millennium, the Queen?s Diamond Decades examines her remarkable reign in the context of the tumultuous world around her.

Here you can view a preview of the third DVD in this magnificent collection, covering the 1970s. It was a decade that saw a mix of gloom and glitter in Britain. Strikes forced a 3-day working week, but in 1977 the nation?s spirits were lifted by the Queen?s Silver Jubilee.

The six-part series has been created exclusively for the Mail by Andy Goodsir, who made the acclaimed TV documentaries The Queen?s Castle and The Royal Family at Work, where he and his team were given unprecedented behind-the-scenes access.

You can celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with this magnificent DVD collection by picking up all six DVDs free with the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday at Tesco or WHSmith ? or see the paper for details of how you can get the full set sent to your door.

Your first disc ? the 1950s ? is free with next Saturday?s Daily Mail. The second disc ? 1960s is free with next week?s Mail on Sunday. You?ll then be able to collect the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and the new Millennium with the Daily Mail.

Saturday Night Live has been lagging on most of their sketches lately, but their musical performances are still on point. This weekend, Usher hit the SNL stage to sing his singles “Climax,” and “Scream.” Funny man Will Ferrell hosted the lackluster episode, but thankfully Andy Samberg made up for the lull via the show’s 100th Digital Short.

Usher popped up in the spoof about taking self-pleasure to a whole new level, as did Justin Bieber. Check it out the hilarious clip after the jump.

Nick Waterhouse

The nostalgist R&B singer Nick Waterhouse brought a huge backing band out for his album-release set at the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock last night — three sax players, two backing vocalists, two drummers, a bassist and keyboardist, by my count. Dressed in era-perfect suits and dresses for Waterhouse?s svelte sound, they played like star students of Stax?s brass sunshine and James Brown?s funky drumming.

Any sold-out set that sends L.A.?s cool kids back to the early R&B staples is worthy, and the 25-year-old Waterhouse?s aesthetic — vintage soul refracted through three decades of hip-hop?s sampling of vintage soul — looks and sounds absolutely great. But last night?s show couldn?t shake a small feeling that it was like listening to Sam Cooke wearing gloves. Waterhouse is such a good student of R&B that sometimes you just want to loosen his tie and make him feel it more.

Waterhouse?s debut for the ever-more-essential Innovative Leisure imprint, ?Time?s All Gone,? relies on using simple elements perfectly: tight, spare horns; a little gain on his vocals; tasteful guitar soloing in the breaks between choruses. The Center for Arts is a lovely venue, but its acoustics can wash out a large band that needs precision to shine.

Those are small quibbles when a band can blow the roof off, and Waterhouse?s ensemble played with the seasoning of a Motown group that?s had 30 years to perfect their hits. ?I Can Only Give You Anything? had a finger-snapping swagger; the street-fighting taunt of ?If You Want Trouble? felt totally endearing. He keeps his guitar talents muted on record, but live Waterhouse peels off runs to crack your horn-rims.

Waterhouse is definitely a star, albeit a quiet one that could take cues from Mayer Hawthorne?s sense of humor or Fitz?s rangy stage presence (speaking of which, if you invested in L.A. white-guy R&B stocks a few years ago, you can retire on that by now). Even his quite-lively soul-man screams felt a little studious, like he knew that letting loose was part of the act.

It?s an interesting contrast to contemporary R&B, which has gone totally digital and electronics-heavy, or narcotic and menacing. Waterhouse is a peerless historian of his sound and delivers it with a modern low-key cool. Yet the point of rhythm and blues is dancing, sweating, and sex appeal — not necessarily sonic archiving.

But Waterhouse has found his sound young, and if he can loosen up his dutiful-pupil instincts, he’ll have a long career of illuminating the past. Once he gets on tour full-time, a little bit of hard living and a little less crate-digging should do the trick.

The publisher behind the steamy New York Times bestseller “50 Shades of Grey” is coming out swinging against libraries that have banned the book — claiming the censorship violates readers’ First Amendment rights.

A rep for Random House tells TMZ, the publishing house “fervently opposes literary censorship and supports the First Amendment rights of readers to make their own reading choices.”

The book, in case you don’t know, is about a man and his sex slave in Seattle — hooray! — and libraries in Georgia, Wisconsin, and Florida have already banned it due to its racy content.

But sexually deviant or not, the book is still a book — at least according to the rep at Random House, who says, “We believe the Brevard County Public Library System [in Florida] is indulging in an act of censorship, and essentially is saying to library patrons: we will judge what you can read.”

The rep adds, “These events resonate as unfortunately considered decisions, especially as the actions withdraw from circulation a book with one of the highest demand curves in recent history.”
