Listen Now Gordon Gano pt. 1
March 26, 2005

Gordon Gano In the early ‘80’s, before Nirvana cornered the market on teen angst and the Columbine Massacre became a brutal stage for teen alienation, the Violent Femmes captured youthful hearts and minds with songs that were both cynical AND cathartic. The band’s lead singer Gordon Gano talks about writing songs with Joan Baez, his life as a devout Baptist, and his new solo record, Hitting The Ground. It began as a collection of tunes for a film which was never released, and is unusual in that most of the songs feature lead vocalists other than Gano (including PJ Harvey, Lou Reed, and They Might Be Giants).

Music from the Show:
  • "Blister In The Sun" Violent Femmes buy music
  • "Oh Wonder" featuring Mary Lou Lord buy music
  • "Don't Pretend" featuring John Cale buy music

Listen Now Ukulele pt. 2
March 19, 2005

Herb Ohta, whose first record label had him perform under the name "Ohta San" to heighten his appeal in Japan. Part two of our romp through the turbulent career of the ukulele. Despite being subject to the fickle winds of pop culture, it remains a big part of the musical culture of Hawaii and Japan. One of the giants of ukulele is Honolulu's Herb Ohta, who won his first and last ukulele playing contest at the tender age of 10, in 1944. He's recorded dozens of albums since then, including a few exploring the instrument's possibilities in jazz and even classical music. Tune in to hear Bach on the uke.
